Message from the Center Leader

Regenerative medicine is a next-generation medical approach that comprises stem cell biology and tissue engineering, a multidisciplinary academic field that seeks to rebuild tissue structures using culture systems.
Great hopes are placed in regenerative medicine since, unlike surgical therapies typified by procedures such as removal of cancers, or symptomatic therapy, for example antipyretics, it supports the quality of life of patients and offers curative treatments.

While molecular biology seeks to understand vital phenomena by dissecting living things into their component parts, we are working to understand life through tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, much as one would design a DVD player or a hybrid vehicle. In this way, we aim to contribute to humanity. Since regenerative medicine is a completely new medical approach, there are no models to follow in Europe and America.

We believe that establishing the social environment for regenerative medicine is extremely important and we are therefore aiming to establish the regulatory science to keep pace with America and Europe. To achieve this, there is a strong need to establish an entirely new education and research environment. In other words, it is possible to create new academic fields through a genuine merger of medical and life sciences with engineering to establish a range of advanced technologies. Without getting bogged down in existing fields and systems, we must seek out new fields with a multidisciplinary approach. To achieve this, it is essential to develop researchers who can establish new concepts and systems, and to pursue challenging research with determination. In other words, we must establish a place where the seeds of science, engineering and medicine encounter real needs. Besides making strides in new medical technologies, we must also create a suitable environment for achieving advanced healthcare.
This will be impossible without fostering a new generation of highly talented young researchers.

Here we are undertaking a world-leading education and research program. Highly capable doctoral students are welcome from Japan and overseas, so why not take up the challenge? We will issue timely reports on our progress on our website, and we hope for your
